A: Emerald is a female Anna's hummingbird, San Diego's most common resident hummer species.

A: We do not know the exact date that Emerald hatched, but we estimate that it was on or about Feb. 1, 2008.

Q: How long will Emerald live?

A: Hummingbirds live 3-5 years on average in the wild, but in some cases have been known to live up to 17 years. We hope Emerald will live a long, healthy, and happy life with us!

Q: What does Emerald eat?

A: In the wild, hummingbirds eat small insects and spiders for protein, in addition to their diet of nectar from flowers. Along with her sugar solution (1 part sugar to 4 parts water), Emerald also receives a protein and vitamin supplement.
